The government of Goa has rented out, on the short term basis its 2,00,000 sq mts prime land at Baga for organising GenX Bazaar 2011, a mega market by Speak Asia in order to boost tourism in the state.
A fully air-conditioned enclosure would be erected on the space for showcasing products in the areas including automobiles, IT, lifestyle, electronics, consumer durables, fashion and lifestyle, besides financial services.
It may be recalled that the Goa Tourism Development Corporation, on public private partnership basis, had decided to construct a five-star hotel on 52,006 sq mt of land, out of the above mentioned land as acquired by the department of tourism in 1976.
However, the government had later dropped the project and decided to set up a House Committee headed by the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, for deciding on all the major projects related to state tourism.
The director of tourism, Mr Swapnil Naik present at a press conference on Saturday to announce the GenX Bazaar 2011 said that around 10,000 people would be visiting the Bazaar and more importantly spending lot of money.
The GTDC chairman, Mr Nikhil Desai, speaking on the occasion said that around 5,500 rooms have been reserved in various Goan hotels for accommodation of the GenX Bazaar participants, while 1,000 vehicles including 800 cars and 200 buses have been booked.
“The event will definitely boost the already sagging tourist season in Goa,” he added.
The chairman of the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa, Mr Gaurish Dhond said that the state hotel industry will be a major beneficiary in the entire exercise lasting for a couple of days.
Meanwhile, interacting with the media, Mr Vivek Gautam, the chief marketing officer of Speak Asia, Asia’s largest integrated market research agency said that GenX Bazaar 2011 will be held on May 9, 10 and 11 and is expected do business worth ` 220 crore.
